Crochet Gauge and Yarn Review: Testing Balloon, Balloon Amigo and Yarnart Jeans

H e l l o!   Last week I started crocheting some new amigurumis for christmas (no, It´s not too early, specially for me as a beginner). While designing and choosing my color palette for each one, I realized I have so many different brands of yarns in my storage, so I´m not sure how to combine them. For that reason I decide to make a yarn comparison for amigurumi gauge. The thing is: although each yarn has the "gauge" info in the label, I decided to test them for my own and check what happens if I crochet arms and legs with a different yarn than the body. Mario pencil topper - free pattern

Here we go!

This is a free pattern of Mario Bros. pencil topper. It´s an easy and little amigurumi that you can crochet for kids.

Let´s star with the main character:

Abreviations:
Sc: single crochet
BLO: Back loop
FLO: Front loop
slst: slipt stich
Hdc: Half double crochet
Dc: Doble crochet
Dec: Decrease
Inc: Increase
Ch: Chain

Materials:
Cream yarn (2-fine)
Red yarn (2-fine)
Blue yarn (2-fine)
Yellow yarn (2-fine)
White yarn (2-fine)
Dark brown (2-fine)
Glue
Crochet hook 2.0 mm
Crochet hook 1.75 mm
Tapestry needle 

Head and body
Start wiht cream yarn
1- MR=6sc
2- Inc in all stitches = 12sc
3- 7- sc in all stitches = 12sc
Change to red yarn
8-10- sc in all stitches = 12sc
Change to blue yarn
11- slst in all stitches = 12slst
12-17- BLO: sc in all stitces = 12sc
Close and hide yarn

Sleeves
With red yarn
On both sides of the body embroider the sleeves covering 1 stitch (pass the yarn 4 times), on round 8. Dont make them so tigth.


Straps
With blue yarn
Pass one or two times the blue yarn starting between rounds 8 and 9 and insert between rounds 11 and 12. Leave 3 stitches between them.

Buttons
With yellow yarn
Embroider a french knot, leave 3 stitches between them.
If you want, you can use normal buttons.

Eyes
With dark brown yarn
On round 5, embroider 1 stitch
Leave 2 stitches between the eyes

Eyebrows
With dark brown yarn
Between rounds 3 and 4, cover 1 stitch just over the eyes

Mustache
With dark brown yarn
6 ch, put every corner on round 6 just in the center of the face. Try to put the center of the mustche on round 7 for give it a round shape under the nose. 

Nose
With cream yarn
Embroider the nose covering 2 sc between rounds 6 and 7

Hat 
With red yarn
1- MR=12dc
2- start with 1ch + sc in all stitches = 12sc and close with a slst
3- start with 1ch + 4sc + 2hdc in the same stitch + 2dc in the same stitch + 2dc in the same stitch + 2hdc in the same stitch + 4sc = 16stitches
Close and hide yarn 

Make the white circle with only two strands of white yarn, use the 1.75 mm crochet. 
1- MR=6sc
2- inc = 12sc, close and hide yarn

Embroider the red M on the white circle with three strands of red yarn. Put it with glue on the front part of the hat.

Paste the hat on the head (use glue).

You can crochet Luigi using the same pattern, just changing colors.
